Google Chrome OS Will Apparently Make All Your Problems Disappear

Reading the blog entry here about Google Chrome OS had me until the final paragraph where they really queued the music and went over the top.  My favorite quote is “People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up” .  I get this for a netbook as most users understand this is a simple device.  Stating that this will be stretched to the desktop experience is quite another thing.  It will be interesting to see how they straddle the line of instant on with competitive features.  Most users have come to expect more than “it starts fast”.

At least we know the future won’t be boring. :)

Hey Whitney!

I saw this news story too --  It's pretty interesting.  I was almost surprised that Google did not try to pick up the GoodOS system.  Even more interesting is that they are looking for Open Source support for creating the system, and have plans to use the Linux kernel as a base.  Given Google's track record with releasing software for Linux at a later time (along with Mac OS X), I wonder if the new system will improve the software offerings/release times for Linux.

I got a chuckle out of the email thing too, because people don't just get their email at home.  They get it in the train, the car, the line at the grocery store, etc.  They get it instantly via their PHONE, and they don't have to wait for anything to power on because the phone beeps when the email comes in.  Hello, it's called Android, and they already have it.  Unbelievable.

I think they used the wrong questions to get to the right answer though.  Linux isn't gaining much mainstream traction - I see way more people switching to Apples than to Linux laptops or netbooks.  Google might start picking up some steam there.  I wouldn't give my Mom a Linux netbook, but I might give her something with a Google-branded OS.
